Best Exterior Paint Brands for Florida: 5 Products Ranked for Climate Performance

Sherwin-Williams Duration is the exterior paint most professional painters in Florida reach for, and for good reason. It is a 100% acrylic latex with high resin solids that delivers excellent UV resistance, strong mildew protection, and reliable adhesion on properly prepared stucco.

Performance. Duration's PermaLast technology creates a thick, flexible film that resists cracking under Florida's thermal cycling. UV resistance is among the best in the category -- south-facing stucco walls coated with Duration maintain color and gloss for 7-8 years in our experience, compared to 4-5 years with mid-range products. Mildew resistance is excellent out of the can, supported by built-in mildewcide that remains active for the life of the coating.

Self-priming claims. Sherwin-Williams markets Duration as self-priming. This holds on previously painted surfaces in good condition. On bare stucco, new masonry, or heavily chalked surfaces, a dedicated primer -- Loxon or PrepRite Masonry Primer -- is still necessary for proper adhesion. Do not skip primer on bare Florida substrates regardless of what the label says.

Pricing and warranty. Duration runs $65-$75 per gallon at retail, with contractor pricing lower. The limited lifetime warranty covers peeling, blistering, and flaking, and includes a fade resistance guarantee -- a meaningful inclusion for Florida applications.

Limitations. Cost is the primary barrier. Duration is 40-60% more expensive per gallon than mid-range alternatives. Application requires attention to spread rates -- applying too thin reduces performance to mid-range levels. Availability through Sherwin-Williams stores is excellent across Florida.

Benjamin Moore Aura Exterior is the other top-tier option for Florida homes and arguably the best exterior paint for color retention available today. Its proprietary Color Lock technology encapsulates pigment particles in the resin matrix, producing fade resistance that exceeds every other product we have tested in the field.

Performance. Aura's color retention on sun-exposed elevations is exceptional. Deep and saturated colors -- reds, blues, dark greens -- that typically fade within 3-4 years on Florida exteriors hold for 6-7 years with Aura. The 100% acrylic formula provides strong UV resistance, and the film builds thick enough to bridge hairline cracks in stucco without an elastomeric additive. Mildew resistance is very good, though we have observed slightly more biological growth on Aura-coated surfaces than on Duration in heavily shaded, high-moisture environments.

Pricing and warranty. Aura runs $75-$85 per gallon, making it the most expensive option in this ranking. Benjamin Moore offers a lifetime limited warranty that covers adhesion, blistering, peeling, and -- critically -- fading and chalking. That fade coverage is rare and valuable in the Florida market.

Limitations. Cost is significant. Fewer retail locations than Sherwin-Williams in Florida -- Benjamin Moore is sold through independent dealers, not company-owned stores. In the Sarasota market, availability is adequate but not as convenient as walking into one of the dozen local SW stores. Application characteristics are excellent for professional painters but slightly less forgiving for DIY users than Duration.

PPG operates two relevant product lines for Florida exterior painting: Manor Hall (the professional tier) and Glidden Diamond (the consumer tier). Both offer reasonable performance at significantly lower price points than Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore.

Glidden Diamond ($35-$45/gal). PPG's consumer line, available at Home Depot. Glidden Diamond offers the basics -- acrylic formula, mildew resistance, one-coat coverage marketing -- at the lowest price point in this ranking. Performance is adequate on well-prepared surfaces. The resin solid content is lower than Manor Hall, which translates to less film build and reduced longevity. We typically see Glidden Diamond exteriors showing chalking and early fade by year 4 in direct Florida sun.

Best for. Budget-conscious homeowners, rental properties, and projects where a 5-year repaint cycle is acceptable. Manor Hall is the better choice of the two for any property where the owner intends to stay long-term.

Behr Marquee is the most widely available exterior paint in Florida, sold exclusively through Home Depot. It has improved substantially over previous Behr formulations and now offers respectable performance for the DIY market.

Performance. Marquee is a 100% acrylic with decent UV resistance and built-in mildew protection. The one-coat hide marketing is aggressive -- Behr guarantees one-coat coverage or they provide additional paint free. In practice, one coat rarely provides acceptable results on Florida stucco. The porous, textured surface absorbs the first coat unevenly, and a second coat is almost always necessary for uniform coverage and adequate film build. On smooth substrates like previously painted wood siding, one-coat performance is more realistic.

Pricing and warranty. Marquee runs $45-$55 per gallon. Behr offers a lifetime limited warranty, though the specifics of fade and chalk coverage are less clearly defined than Sherwin-Williams or Benjamin Moore warranties.

Why professionals generally avoid it. Application characteristics are the main issue. Marquee has a heavier body and different flow profile than professional-grade paints. It does not level as smoothly, and brush marks are more visible on flat surfaces. For spray application with back-rolling -- the standard method for Florida stucco -- it performs adequately. For cut-in work and detail areas, most professionals prefer the working properties of Duration or Aura.

Performance. Evershield excels in UV resistance, which is expected given its origins in the desert Southwest. The 100% acrylic formula handles heat cycling well and resists chalking on masonry surfaces. Mildew resistance is adequate but not exceptional -- the product was developed for dry climates where mildew is less of a concern than in Florida's humidity. In the limited number of Evershield applications we have observed in the Sarasota market, UV performance matched Duration, but mildew appeared on shaded, north-facing surfaces sooner than with SW or BM products.

Pricing and warranty. Evershield runs $50-$60 per gallon. Dunn-Edwards offers a limited lifetime warranty. Florida retail availability is growing but still limited compared to the established national brands.

Best for. Homeowners drawn to Dunn-Edwards' color selection or who have used the brand successfully on previous projects. As a Florida exterior paint, it is a solid mid-to-upper tier option with room to prove itself in the humidity category. Worth watching as the brand expands its Gulf Coast presence.
